Thank you for visiting my page dedicated to the BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY. I first heard about this incredible organization, aimed at animal rescue and rehabilitation, in September of 2009, and was immediately interested in learning how I could help. In November of 2009, I took a trip up to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. It was one of the most touching experiences of my life. I wasn’t prepared for how emotional and intense the visit would be for me. I thought, ‘This will be great. I’ll go and help out and get to play with all of the animals!’ But, within the first 30 seconds of the introductory video, I was in the back corner with tears running down my face, a running nose and no tissue! So much for holding it together!
I, like many of you, am an animal lover, and it breaks my heart to see them mistreated or abused in any way. I was in awe of what the Sanctuary has been able to provide for animals in need. There are around 1600 animals at the Sanctuary, most of which are cats and dogs, but there are also horses, mules, rabbits, birds, and a rehabilitation area for wild animals. They provide a permanent home at the Sanctuary to animals that are deemed unadoptable; and they help those animals who are homeless find new, loving, forever homes. Twenty two of the dogs who were involved in the Michael Vick dog abuse scandal (who are now re-named the ‘VICKTORY DOGS’), reside on the property, and are being worked with diligently by Sanctuary staff to ensure they are rehabilitated. The first of the Vicktory dogs has found her forever home already!
Best Friends is also working to shut down puppy mills and educate people on what they are getting when they buy a dog from a pet store. Silva Battista and Faith Maloney, two of the co-founders, gave me an in depth tour of the property, where I was able to see all the behind the scenes action of the facility, and it was unbelievable! I have tried my best to recount my experience and send photos to everyone who has asked about my trip, but to be perfectly honest, it’s something that you just have to see for yourself. My time at the Sanctuary was incredibly rewarding, and I believe every animal lover should take the chance to experience it first hand. I encourage you to visit the sanctuary and volunteer. It is as life altering for the animals as it will be for you.
